Beatrice Rose is a two-year-old cross-eyed cat with a broken tail, who was abandoned at birth and bottle fed. She is a medium haired petite kitty who eats well. She’s not a jumper and uses the scratching pose (she never uses the furniture to scratch). Bea is a total indoor cat and is afraid of the outside as well as sudden noises. She also tends to hide when a dog is around. She is quiet and craves human companionship. Bea likes gentle brushings, and she likes to sleep on the bed and cuddle in her bed with you. She enjoys routines eating at the same time for breakfast and dinner. Beatrice is very smart and responds to her name. However, at times she can become over stimulated and get an attitude. Bea would need a home with older children, as she gets startled easily. Beatrice Ross is currently residing in foster care. Meet Shawn. He was abandoned at a local pet store, and now he is at Heartland SPCA looking for his forever home. He is very affectionate and greatly enjoys his lap time. Shawn will purr and purr and purr, amping it up as he makes muffins on your legs. He likes to put his face up to yours and give “kitty kisses” as he bumps noses or rubs on your chin. Perfect cat alert….that’s right, you read that right! They really don’t come any better than me, so just read on to see for yourself. Let’s start out with my adorable personality. I love everybody and most other animals. Already have a dog or another feline in your life? That’s alright with me, I’m such a sweetie pie that I know they’ll love me too. I’m very social and extremely friendly. Have some kids in your house? Bring ‘em on, I’m up for it. I love to be held, to play, and I love to cuddle–are you starting to see where I’m going with this? Molly came to Heartland SPCA as a stray with her three kittens. They’ve since become weaned so Molly is here at the adoption center, patiently waiting for her home. Interestingly enough, Molly’s tail is short and stubby, but she still likes to flick around when you talk to her. She’s very engaging when you interact with her, and she also loves being pet, too. Meet Laverne and Shirley! Their owner passed away in July from Alzheimer’s disease. The State took the estate over and to their surprise they found these two precious girls when inspecting the home. Apparently, family members were feeding these sweet girls, but they remained in the home alone. Now it’s time for Laverne and Shirley to find their new forever home and enjoy the love and attention that they once had. Laverne and Shirley are both very sweet, but they are a little shy right now. With some sweet talking and love they come out their shell and love to cuddle and be petted. They have been through a lot together and are very attached. Just in time: Christmas Eve Adoption Specials!

Heartland SPCA will sponsor a Christmas Eve Adoption Special from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 24^th at the Heartland SPCA Pet Adoption Center! Adoption fees will be waived for dogs, cats, kittens and rabbits when you spend $50 in Heartland SPCA’s Baxter’s Boutique on must have pet supplies for your new companion!

“Adopting a shelter animal is the beginning of a rewarding journey for the animal and the human companion,” Director of Shelter Operations Joe Hinkle said. “However, it’s important to have all the tools and supplies needed for your new furry friend.”

Numerous pet items are available for purchase at Baxter’s Boutique located within the Pet Adoption Center including flea and tick preventative, heartworm preventative, leashes, collars, toys, treats and more.

“Both dogs and cats can suffer from fleas or heartworms,” Hinkle explains. “So we highly recommend preventatives in order to prevent more costly health concerns down the road.”

Hinkle also recommends investing in toys that keep a new pet entertained while family is away. For the most intelligent of pets, he recommends mind stimulating toys like Kongs and treat dispensers.

“Kongs can be filled with peanut butter, frozen, and left with your pet for hours of complex mind-stimulation,” Hinkle said. “Treat dispensers will make dogs work for their rewards.”

Heartland SPCA adoptable pets have received a veterinary examination, age-appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, permanent microchip identification and one month of flea and heartworm prevention. Each Heartland SPCA pet adoption also includes one month of complimentary pet insurance.

The Christmas Eve Adoption Special will be from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 24^th at the Heartland SPCA Pet Adoption Center located at 9800 W. 67^th St. Merriam, KS 66203.

Heartland SPCA is also continuing its fee-waived special for adult cats now through Dec. 31^st.

Hi there my name is Bootsy. I was roaming the streets in Plattsburg when I was taken in by a nice lady. She took good care of me, but her husband became ill and they had to move to Kansas City to be closer to the hospital. Unfortunately, I could not go because their new place did not allow cats. My mom thought she found a home for me, but they never came to pick me up. My mom found another temporary home for me until they could find me a permanent home, but nobody wanted me. That’s until they contacted Heartland SPCA – where they took me in so I could find my forever home! I’m really happy here. All the people are great, and I love to play and be doted on by the staff and volunteers, but I still really want a home of my own! They say third times a charm!
